Wi-Fi, Home Network & Connectivity Setup

Weak signal, dead zones, dropping connections and slow speeds — diagnosed with a proper survey rather than by guesswork.

A significant number of the 'my laptop is slow' calls we take turn out to be network problems, not computer problems. It is worth ruling out first because it costs you nothing — if the internet is slow on every device in the flat, the laptop is not the issue.

Wi-Fi problems in this region have a few recurring causes. Buildings are dense and channel congestion is severe, particularly on the crowded 2.4 GHz band in areas like Nallasopara West and Virar East where dozens of networks overlap. Routers are often placed wherever the cable happened to enter the flat rather than where they would work best. And ISP-supplied routers are frequently basic units struggling to cover a flat with concrete internal walls.

The technical detail, if you want it

A proper Wi-Fi survey takes about half an hour and it removes the guesswork entirely. We measure signal strength and interference in each room, scan the channels in use by neighbouring networks, and test actual throughput at different points rather than relying on the signal bars, which tell you very little.

The fixes are usually less expensive than people expect. Router repositioning is free and frequently the single biggest improvement — a router in a corner, behind a television or inside a cupboard is losing most of its coverage to walls. Channel selection matters enormously in dense buildings; moving to a less congested channel often doubles usable throughput. Enabling and correctly configuring the 5 GHz band helps for devices near the router, though it penetrates walls less well than 2.4 GHz.

Where the flat genuinely cannot be covered from one point, a mesh system is the right answer rather than a range extender. Extenders halve throughput on the extended segment and create a second network name that devices cling to badly. Mesh systems handle handover properly.

Security is the part people skip. Default router passwords, WPS left enabled, and old WPA/WEP encryption are all common and all exploitable. We change the admin password, use WPA2 or WPA3, disable WPS and set up a separate guest network so visitors never touch your main one.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Whole-site signal survey

Signal strength, interference and actual throughput measured room by room, because signal bars tell you almost nothing useful.

  2. Step 02

    Channel scan

Neighbouring networks and channel congestion mapped. In dense buildings, moving to a clear channel often doubles usable speed at no cost.

  3. Step 03

    Device-side testing

We test whether the problem is the network or the device — an ageing single-band wireless card in a laptop is a common and cheap fix.

  4. Step 04

    Router repositioning

The single most effective free change. We identify the best practical position given where your cable enters and what furniture allows.

  5. Step 05

    Band and channel configuration

2.4 GHz and 5 GHz configured appropriately, with band steering set up sensibly so devices use the right one.

  6. Step 06

    Mesh where genuinely needed

Where one point cannot cover the space, a mesh system with proper handover — not a range extender that halves throughput.

  7. Step 07

    Security hardening

Admin password changed, WPA2 or WPA3 enabled, WPS disabled, firmware updated and a separate guest network created.

  8. Step 08

    Verification on every device

Speed and stability tested on each device that matters, in the rooms where they are actually used.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
Wi-Fi survey and optimisation Survey, repositioning, channel and band configuration. ₹600 – ₹1,200
Router configuration and security hardening Admin password, WPA2/WPA3, WPS disabled, guest network. ₹600 – ₹1,000
Laptop wireless card replacement Modern dual-band card. Often the real fix for one slow device. ₹900 – ₹2,200
Mesh Wi-Fi system (2 nodes, supplied and configured) For flats that genuinely cannot be covered from one point. ₹5,500 – ₹8,500
Ethernet cabling for a room The most reliable option for a work desk or gaming setup. ₹1,200 – ₹3,500
Small office network setup Switching, addressing, printer and shared storage access. ₹2,500 – ₹8,500
Connectivity diagnosis When combined with any other job. Free

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

Before blaming the laptop, check whether the internet is slow on every device. If it is, the laptop is not your problem.

Router position is the biggest free improvement available. Central, elevated, out of cupboards and away from the television.

In dense buildings, changing to a less congested channel often doubles usable speed and costs nothing.

Avoid range extenders. They halve throughput on the extended segment. A mesh system handles it properly.

Change the router admin password. Default credentials on an internet-facing device are a genuine risk.

Slow only in the evening usually means shared building or ISP congestion rather than your equipment.

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”

Wi-Fi & Home Network Setup — your questions answered

My Wi-Fi is slow only on the laptop. Is it the laptop?
Quite possibly — an ageing single-band wireless card cannot use the 5 GHz band and struggles in congested areas. Replacing it with a modern dual-band card is an inexpensive part and a quick fit. We test before recommending it.
Why is my internet slow only in the evening?
That is almost always shared congestion — either on your building's connection or on the ISP's local capacity at peak hours. It is worth confirming, because no amount of equipment spending will fix it.
Should I buy a range extender or a mesh system?
A mesh system, in nearly every case. Extenders halve throughput on the extended segment and create handover problems. Mesh systems maintain speed and move devices between nodes properly.
Is repositioning the router really that effective?
Yes, and it is free. A router in a corner, in a cupboard or behind a television is losing most of its coverage to obstructions. Central and elevated makes a substantial difference in most flats.
How do I know my Wi-Fi is secure?
Check that WPA2 or WPA3 is enabled, that the router admin password is not the default, that WPS is disabled and that the firmware is current. We configure all of these and set up a separate guest network as well.
Can you set up wired Ethernet instead?
Yes, and for a work desk or gaming setup it is the most reliable option available. We run and terminate the cabling neatly.
