SSD & RAM Upgrade — Make an Old Laptop Feel New

The single most effective upgrade for a slow laptop. Full clone, before-and-after benchmarks, nothing reinstalled.

If your laptop takes minutes to reach the desktop, freezes when you open a few browser tabs, or grinds audibly when it is working, you almost certainly do not need a new machine. You need an SSD. On any laptop with a mechanical hard drive, replacing it with a solid-state drive is the largest single performance improvement available, and it typically costs less than a mid-range phone.

The difference is not subtle. Boot times drop from three or four minutes to under twenty seconds. Applications that took half a minute to open appear immediately. The endless waiting that made you think the laptop was finished simply stops. We benchmark before and after and give you both results, so you can see the actual measured difference rather than taking our word for it.

The technical detail, if you want it

Getting the upgrade right involves a few decisions worth understanding.

Interface first. Older laptops use SATA, which caps at around 550 MB/s — still roughly five times faster than a mechanical drive. Newer machines have an M.2 slot supporting NVMe, which reaches several thousand MB/s. We check what your specific model supports, because fitting an NVMe drive to a machine that only supports SATA over M.2 wastes your money on speed you cannot use.

Capacity next. We generally recommend at least 500 GB. SSDs also perform better and last longer with free space available, so buying a drive that will sit at 95% full is a false economy.

RAM is the second half of the equation, and it matters for different reasons. If you regularly have many browser tabs open, or run design software, or use virtual machines, insufficient RAM forces the system to swap to disk constantly. 8 GB is the practical minimum today; 16 GB is comfortable. Critically, we check whether your model has soldered memory before promising anything — on many current thin laptops the RAM cannot be upgraded at all, and we tell you that upfront rather than after opening the machine.

    Boot time, disk read and write speeds, and application launch times measured before any work. This is the "before" half of your report.

  2. Step 02

    Compatibility check

    We confirm the interface your model supports — SATA, M.2 SATA or NVMe — and whether the RAM is upgradeable or soldered, before recommending anything.

  3. Step 03

    Existing drive health check

    SMART data read on the current drive. If it is failing, we clone urgently and carefully rather than treating it as a routine job.

  4. Step 04

    Full sector-level clone

    Your entire system cloned to the new drive — Windows, programs, settings, browser profiles, files. Nothing is reinstalled and nothing is lost.

  5. Step 05

    Fitting and firmware setup

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

An SSD is the single biggest improvement you can make to an older laptop. Do this before considering a replacement machine.

Choose at least 500 GB. SSDs perform better and last longer with free space, so a drive that will sit nearly full is a false economy.

RAM must be speed-matched. Mismatched modules run at the slower speed and can cause instability.

Two matched modules in the correct slots enable dual-channel mode, which is measurably faster than one larger module.

Keep your old drive. In an external caddy it becomes a useful backup disk for almost no extra cost.

Ask for benchmarks before and after. It is the only objective proof that you got what you paid for.

Can every laptop be upgraded?

Is it worth upgrading a five or six-year-old laptop?
