Most macOS problems are recoverable without losing anything, and it is worth knowing that before anyone tells you to erase the disk. A Mac that will not boot, shows a prohibitory symbol, gets stuck on the Apple logo, or panics repeatedly can usually be repaired in place — disk repair from Recovery, resetting NVRAM and SMC, reinstalling macOS over the top without erasing, or booting into safe mode to remove a problem extension.

We always attempt in-place recovery first, and only erase and reinstall when the file system is genuinely beyond repair. Even then we clone the drive before touching anything, so your data survives regardless of the outcome.

The technical detail, if you want it

Several things about a proper macOS setup are worth doing correctly rather than quickly.

Time Machine is the best backup system built into any operating system, and it is enormously underused. Given an external drive, it maintains hourly, daily and weekly versions automatically and can restore either a single file or an entire machine. We set it up, run the first full backup and demonstrate a restore so you know it works.

Migration Assistant moves everything from an old Mac — applications, settings, accounts, files — to a new one, over a network or from a Time Machine backup. It works well but it can carry across accumulated clutter and, occasionally, the problem you were trying to escape. We advise on when a clean install with selective migration is the better route.

Switching from Windows is its own small project: transferring files, finding macOS equivalents for the software you relied on, setting up Mail and Calendar with your existing accounts, and explaining the handful of interface differences that catch people out. We do that as a guided setup rather than dropping a configured machine on you with no explanation.

And on Apple Silicon Macs, storage is soldered. There is no removing the drive if the machine will not boot, which makes a working Time Machine backup considerably more important than it used to be.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Full clone before anything

    The drive is imaged before any repair or reinstall is attempted, so your data is safe regardless of what happens next.

  2. Step 02

    In-place recovery attempts first

    Disk repair from Recovery, NVRAM and SMC resets, safe mode boot and extension removal — all tried before any suggestion of erasing.

  3. Step 03

    Storage health check

    SMART data read to confirm whether the boot problem is actually a failing drive, since reinstalling onto a dying disk solves nothing.

  4. Step 04

    Reinstall over the top where possible

    macOS can usually be reinstalled without erasing, keeping your files, applications and settings intact. This is our default route.

  5. Step 05

    Clean install with selective migration

    Where a fresh start is genuinely needed, we install cleanly and migrate your data selectively rather than carrying accumulated clutter across.

  6. Step 06

    Time Machine setup and restore test

    Backup configured to your external drive, first full backup completed, and a restore demonstrated so you know it actually works.

  7. Step 07

    Setup and handover walkthrough

    Accounts, Mail, iCloud, printers and essential software configured, then a short walkthrough so you are not left guessing.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

Set up Time Machine today if you have not. It is built into macOS, it is genuinely excellent and it costs nothing beyond an external drive.

●

On Apple Silicon Macs the storage is soldered to the board. A backup is not optional on these machines.

●

Keep at least 15% of your startup disk free. A full disk causes performance problems and update failures.

●

Before any major macOS upgrade, run a Time Machine backup. It is the difference between an inconvenience and a disaster.

●

A Mac that will not boot is usually recoverable. Do not let anyone erase the disk before an in-place repair has been attempted.

My Mac will not start up. Will I lose everything?
Very unlikely. Most boot failures are file system or firmware issues that are repairable in place. We clone the drive before doing anything, so your data is protected regardless of the outcome.
Can macOS be reinstalled without erasing my files?
