Graphics Card Repair — Laptop & Desktop

Laptop and desktop graphics card faults — black screen, screen artifacts, crashing under load, dead GPU — diagnosed at component level instead of being written off as a full board replacement.

A graphics card fault looks identical whether it is a laptop or a desktop — black screen, coloured artifacts across the display, random crashes under load, or a machine that simply will not post — but the repair path is completely different for each. On a laptop the GPU is almost always soldered directly to the motherboard, so a failing chip means board-level rework, not a part swap. On a desktop it is a removable card, which usually makes the fix faster and cheaper.

We diagnose both the same honest way: isolate whether the fault is actually the GPU before quoting anything. A lot of "dead graphics card" machines we see turn out to be a loose RAM module, an overheating cooler, or a power delivery fault elsewhere on the board — all far cheaper to fix than a graphics chip. The free bench diagnosis exists specifically so you are not quoted for a GPU replacement when the real fault is something simpler.

The technical detail, if you want it

Symptom mapping differs by machine type, and getting this right the first time is most of the job.

Laptop, screen stays black but the machine powers on: almost always a soldered GPU with cracked solder joints from repeated heat cycling — classic in gaming and workstation laptops run hot for long sessions. This needs BGA reflow or reball, not a new motherboard.

Laptop, screen shows coloured lines, static or garbled graphics: the GPU chip itself is failing, not just its solder joints. Reflow sometimes buys extra life; reball is the more durable fix.

Desktop, no display but fans spin: reseat the card first — oxidised PCIe contacts cause this more often than people expect. If reseating does not fix it, the card's VRAM or power stage has usually failed.

Crashes, artifacts or driver resets only under load (gaming, rendering, video export): almost always thermal. Old thermal paste or a dust-clogged cooler lets the chip run hot enough to throttle or crash without actually dying — cleaning and repasting resolves most of these.

Card works but is unusually loud or smells faintly of burning: failing fan bearings or a stressed capacitor. Worth a look before it becomes a full failure.

Either way, we isolate the fault before quoting — RAM, power delivery and overheating all mimic a dead graphics card, and are all far cheaper to put right.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Free isolation diagnosis

Before anything is called a "dead graphics card", we rule out RAM, power delivery and overheating — all of which mimic GPU failure and are far cheaper to fix.

  2. Step 02

    Thermal check under load

Temperatures measured with the machine working, not idle, since most artifact and crash symptoms only appear once the chip heats up.

  3. Step 03

    Laptop: board-level inspection

Microscope inspection of the GPU solder joints for the hairline cracking that causes black-screen and artifact faults in soldered graphics chips.

  4. Step 04

    Desktop: card-level testing

Card reseated and tested in isolation, VRAM and power stage checked, before any replacement is suggested.

  5. Step 05

    Written quote with options

What is actually wrong, what it costs to fix, and — where relevant — whether cleaning and repasting is enough versus needing reflow, reball or replacement.

  6. Step 06

    Repair and stress testing

Repair carried out, then the machine is run under real load before being handed back, not just powered on and assumed fine.

  7. Step 07

    Protection advice

Simple, free guidance on the cleaning interval or cooling setup that prevents the same fault recurring.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
Cleaning and repaste (laptop or desktop) Fixes the majority of load-only crashes and artifact faults caused by heat, not chip failure. ₹700 – ₹1,400
Desktop graphics card service or replacement Card-level repair attempted first; replacement only if the card genuinely cannot be serviced. ₹1,500 – ₹12,000
Laptop GPU BGA reflow or reball For cracked solder joints under a soldered laptop graphics chip — the most common laptop GPU fault. ₹4,500 – ₹9,500

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

●

Most "dead graphics card" symptoms on a laptop are actually overheating, not a failed chip — clean the vents before assuming the worst.

●

If crashes or artifacts only happen after extended gaming or rendering, that is a strong sign it is thermal, not component failure.

●

A desktop card is almost always worth servicing before replacing — the VRAM, power stage and fans can often be fixed individually.

●

Keep a laptop on a hard, flat surface during heavy use — blocked underside vents are one of the most common causes of GPU overheating we see.

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”

Graphics Card Repair — your questions answered

My laptop screen is completely black but the machine powers on. Is the graphics card dead?
Possibly, but black screen is also caused by a loose RAM module or a display cable fault, both far cheaper to fix. We check those first — the free diagnosis exists so you are not quoted for a GPU repair when the real fault is simpler.
Can a laptop graphics card actually be repaired, or does the whole motherboard need replacing?
In most cases it can be repaired on the board — a BGA reflow or reball fixes cracked solder joints under the chip without replacing the whole motherboard. Full board replacement is only suggested when component-level repair genuinely is not viable.
My games crash or the screen shows artifacts, but only after playing for a while. What does that mean?
That pattern is almost always thermal — old thermal paste or a dust-clogged cooler letting the chip overheat under sustained load. Cleaning and repasting resolves most of these without needing any chip-level repair.
Do you repair desktop graphics cards or only laptops?
Both. A desktop card is usually faster and cheaper to fix since it can be tested and serviced on its own, away from the rest of the machine, rather than requiring board-level work.
How do you tell if it is really the graphics card and not something else?
Isolation testing — checking RAM, power delivery and thermals before concluding the GPU itself has failed. A genuinely dead graphics card is less common than people assume; most "dead GPU" machines we see turn out to be something cheaper.
