Laptop Overheating, Throttling & Cooling Fan Repair

Loud fans, hot chassis, throttling or sudden shutdowns — full teardown, ultrasonic heatsink clean, premium compound and before-and-after temperature proof.

Overheating is the most under-treated laptop problem in this region and the one that causes the most expensive damage later. The chain is straightforward: dust blocks the heatsink fins, airflow drops, temperatures climb, the processor throttles itself to avoid damage, and the machine feels slow. If it continues for long enough, sustained heat cracks the solder joints under the GPU or chipset — and at that point you are looking at a reball, not a clean.

The honest good news is that the fix at the early stage is cheap. A full teardown, ultrasonic cleaning of the heatsink fins, premium thermal compound and correctly specified thermal pads typically drops peak temperatures by 15–25°C on a neglected machine. The technical detail, if you want it

There are three separate things that go wrong in a laptop cooling system, and a proper service addresses all of them.

First, the heatsink fins. Air is pulled in through the bottom vents and pushed out through the fins by the fan. Over time a dense mat of dust and lint forms against the fins, and because it sits on the exhaust side you cannot see it or blow it out from outside. Compressed air through the vents pushes it deeper. It has to be removed physically with the heatsink off — which is why 'blowing the fan out' is not a service.

Second, the thermal interface. The compound between the processor die and the heatsink dries out over three to five years and stops transferring heat. Replacing it is essential, but so is quantity and quality — too much compound insulates rather than conducts. Alongside it, the thermal pads on the VRM, memory and graphics power stages compress and harden, and they must be replaced at the correct thickness. A pad that is too thin leaves an air gap; too thick and it holds the heatsink off the die.

Third, the fan itself. Sleeve bearings dry out and the fan starts rattling or whining, and airflow drops well before it fails completely. A fan that has begun making noise is already moving less air than it should.

On top of all that, we check the fan curve. Many manufacturers set conservative curves that let the machine run hot before ramping the fan. Where the model allows it, adjusting that is free and makes a real difference.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Baseline temperature measurement

    We record idle and full-load CPU and GPU temperatures, fan speed and clock throttling before touching anything. This becomes the "before" half of your report.

  2. Step 02

    Full teardown

    Bottom panel, board and heatsink assembly removed. This is the only way to reach the dust mat on the exhaust side of the fins — compressed air from outside pushes it deeper.

  3. Step 03

    Ultrasonic heatsink cleaning

    The heatsink and fan are cleaned ultrasonically so the fins are genuinely clear, then dried thoroughly before reassembly.

  4. Step 04

    Fan inspection and lubrication

    Bearing checked for wear and play. Serviceable fans are cleaned and lubricated; worn ones are quoted for replacement with the reason explained.

  5. Step 05

    Premium compound and correct pads

    High-conductivity thermal compound applied in the right quantity, and thermal pads replaced at the correct thickness on the VRM, memory and graphics power stages.

  6. Step 06

    Vent and intake clearing

    Bottom intake grilles and exhaust vents cleared, and internal dust filters cleaned or replaced where the model has them.

  7. Step 07

    Load testing and proof

    A one-hour stress test on CPU and GPU together, with the after-temperatures recorded and both graphs shared with you.

  8. Step 08

    Fan curve tuning

    Where the model permits it, we set a more sensible fan curve so the cooling responds before the machine is already hot. No extra charge.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

Never use a laptop on a bed, sofa or cushion. It seals the bottom intake vents completely and is the single most common cause of overheating we see.

A simple stand that lifts the rear by two centimetres improves airflow noticeably and costs almost nothing.

Do not blow compressed air into the vents. It pushes the dust mat deeper into the fins where it becomes harder to remove.

In this region, service every six months rather than annually — dust and heat levels here are well above average.

A fan that has started making noise is already moving less air. That is the cheap moment to act, not after the shutdowns start.

How much cooler will my laptop actually run?
On a neglected machine, typically 15–25°C lower at peak load. We measure before and after under identical conditions and give you both graphs, so it is a measured result rather than a claim.
Can I just blow air into the vents myself?
It does very little and can make things worse. The dust forms a dense mat against the fins on the exhaust side, and air from outside pushes it further in. Proper cleaning needs the heatsink removed.
Is a cooling pad worth buying?
A stand that raises the rear and lets air reach the intake helps meaningfully. Powered cooling pads add a little more. Neither substitutes for clean internals — external accessories cannot fix a blocked heatsink.
My laptop shuts down during games. Is that damage already done?
Not yet — the shutdown is a protection mechanism doing its job. But repeated high-temperature cycling eventually cracks solder joints under the GPU, which is a much more expensive repair. Act now.
How often should I get this done?
Every six months in this region, and every three months in industrial areas like Waliv, Sativali and Pelhar. Twelve months is fine in a clean, air-conditioned environment, which describes very few homes here.
Do you use liquid metal on gaming laptops?
