Laptop Hinge Repair & Body Casing Replacement

Stiff, cracking or broken hinges rebuilt with metal inserts — not glue. Cracked palm rests, broken lids and split casings repaired properly.

A stiff hinge is the cheapest laptop fault to fix and one of the most expensive to ignore. Here is why: the hinge is bolted into plastic posts moulded into the lid. As the hinge stiffens with age, opening the laptop applies increasing force to those posts until they crack and tear out. Once that happens the lid separates, the display cable inside gets stretched and pinched, and the panel itself often cracks. A ₹900 job becomes a ₹6,000 one.

The warning sign is unmistakable and most people ignore it: a cracking or popping sound when you open the lid, or a corner of the bezel lifting away from the screen. If your laptop is doing that, it is worth getting looked at now rather than after the lid comes off in your hand.

The technical detail, if you want it

How a hinge is repaired determines whether the repair lasts. The cheap approach — and it is common — is to glue the broken plastic back together. That fails within weeks because the plastic is now weaker than it was, and it is being asked to take the same load that broke it originally.

What we do instead is rebuild the mounting points with metal. The broken plastic posts are cleaned out, brass threaded inserts are set into the lid with structural epoxy, and the hinge is bolted to metal rather than to plastic. That is stronger than the original design, not merely equal to it. On models where the hinge itself has seized, we also strip, clean and re-lubricate the hinge mechanism so it is not applying excessive force in the first place — repairing the mount without fixing the seized hinge just means it breaks again somewhere else.

Body and casing work follows the same principle. Cracked palm rests, split bottom panels and broken bezels can often be repaired with plastic welding and reinforcement rather than replaced, which is significantly cheaper and, done properly, structurally sound. We will always tell you when replacement is genuinely the better option — for example when a crack runs through a screw boss that carries structural load.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

Assessment of both hinge and mount

We check the hinge mechanism itself and the mounting posts separately. Repairing one without the other is the most common reason hinge repairs fail again.

  2. Step 02

    Display cable inspection

Broken hinges very often chafe or pinch the display cable. We inspect it before quoting so you are not surprised by a second fault later.

  3. Step 03

    Hinge mechanism servicing

Seized or gritty hinges are stripped, cleaned of rust and old grease, and re-lubricated so they move freely and stop overloading the mount.

  4. Step 04

    Metal-insert rebuild

Broken plastic posts cleaned out and brass threaded inserts set with structural epoxy, so the hinge bolts into metal rather than plastic. Stronger than the original design.

  5. Step 05

    Casing repair or replacement

Cracks in the lid, palm rest or base repaired by plastic welding with internal reinforcement where sound, replaced where a crack crosses a structural screw boss.

  6. Step 06

    Cable rerouting and testing

Display cable rerouted correctly with proper strain relief, then the lid opened and closed through its full range while the display is monitored for flicker.

  7. Step 07

    Cure and load test

The epoxy is left to cure fully before the laptop is used, then the lid is cycled repeatedly under load to confirm the rebuild holds.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
Single hinge mount rebuild (metal inserts) The standard repair for a torn-out hinge post. ₹900 – ₹1,600
Both hinge mounts rebuilt Recommended when one has failed — the other is usually close behind. ₹1,500 – ₹2,600
Hinge mechanism replacement Where the hinge itself is seized or rusted beyond servicing. ₹1,200 – ₹2,400
Palm rest / top cover replacement For cracks crossing structural screw bosses. ₹1,800 – ₹3,800
Lid (back cover) replacement Where the lid is too damaged to rebuild. ₹2,200 – ₹4,200
Bottom panel repair or replacement Cracks and broken mounting points repaired or panel replaced. ₹800 – ₹2,200

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

Open your laptop from the centre of the lid with both hands, never from one corner. Corner opening is the single biggest cause of hinge failure.

Never pick the laptop up by the screen. It twists the hinge mounts every time.

A cracking sound when opening is the warning stage. That is the ₹900 moment, not the ₹6,000 one.

If the bezel corner has started lifting, stop opening the lid fully until it is repaired.

Ask whether the repair uses metal inserts or glue. Glue repairs typically fail within weeks.

“My laptop lid had come away completely. Another shop had glued it before and it broke again within a month. These people put metal inserts into the lid and bolted the hinge to that. Six months and it is still perfectly solid. They also came all the way to Naigaon West with no extra charge.”

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

Laptop Hinge & Body Repair — your questions answered

My hinge is stiff but nothing is broken yet. Should I wait?
No — this is exactly the right time. A stiff hinge is what breaks the mounting posts. Servicing the mechanism now costs a fraction of rebuilding a torn-out lid later.
Is a glued hinge repair acceptable?
Not in our view. The plastic that broke is now weaker and is being asked to take the same load. We rebuild with brass threaded inserts and structural epoxy so the hinge bolts into metal instead.
If one hinge broke, should I fix both?
We usually recommend it. Both hinges have done the same number of cycles under the same stress, so when one goes the other is generally not far behind. Doing both together saves a second teardown.
My screen flickers at certain lid angles. Is that the hinge?
Very likely — a broken hinge chafes or pinches the display cable. We inspect the cable as part of every hinge assessment, since replacing the hinge without the cable leaves the fault in place.
Can a cracked palm rest be repaired instead of replaced?
Often yes, using plastic welding with internal reinforcement, which is considerably cheaper. Where the crack runs through a screw boss carrying structural load, replacement is the right answer and we will say so.
How long does a hinge repair take?
One to two working days. The repair itself is quicker but the structural epoxy needs full cure time before the laptop is used, and we will not rush that.
