Laptop Charging Port, DC Jack & USB-C Repair

Charging only at a certain angle, loose socket, or charging stopped entirely — port replaced and resoldered properly at board level.

A loose charging port is a repair people put off for months, and it is one of the few faults that genuinely gets more expensive the longer you wait. The reason is electrical, not mechanical. As the socket works loose from the board, the connection becomes intermittent — and every time it makes and breaks under load it produces a small arc. That arcing progressively damages the pads, and eventually the charging circuit on the motherboard.

So the same fault costs ₹900 as a port replacement in month one, and ₹3,000 as a port replacement plus charging circuit repair in month six. If your charger only works at a particular angle, or you have started propping the cable up with something, that is the point to get it done.

The technical detail, if you want it

There are two distinct designs and they behave differently. Older and larger laptops use a barrel DC jack, sometimes on a small daughterboard connected by a cable — which is the easy case, since the daughterboard is simply replaced — and sometimes soldered directly to the motherboard, which needs proper desoldering and resoldering with adequate heat.

Modern thin laptops charge through USB-C, and that is finer work. A USB-C connector has twenty-four pins on a very tight pitch, it carries power, data and often display signal simultaneously, and it is soldered directly to the main board. Replacing it requires a hot-air station with accurate temperature control, a preheater to avoid stressing the board, a microscope, and experience — a badly executed USB-C replacement can lift pads and cause far more damage than the original fault.

The diagnosis also matters. 'Not charging' has several possible causes and only one of them is the port. It could be the adapter, the port, the charging IC on the board, a blown fuse on the input rail, or the battery itself. We test each of those with known-good parts before quoting, because replacing a port on a machine whose actual fault is the charging IC helps nobody.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Fault isolation with known-good parts

We test the adapter, the port, the charging circuit and the battery separately using known-good parts, so we replace the component that is actually faulty.

  2. Step 02

    Board inspection under magnification

The port area is examined under the microscope for arcing damage, lifted pads and corrosion — all of which change the scope of the repair.

  3. Step 03

Written quote with the real scope

If the charging circuit has already been damaged we tell you now, with photographs, rather than discovering it after you have approved a simple port swap.

  4. Step 04

    Controlled desoldering

Board preheated to avoid thermal shock, then the old connector removed with hot air at controlled temperature so the pads survive.

  5. Step 05

    Pad cleaning and repair

Pads cleaned and re-tinned, and any lifted or burnt pads rebuilt under the microscope before the new connector goes on.

  6. Step 06

    New port fitted and reinforced

Replacement connector soldered and, where the design allows, mechanically reinforced so future cable stress goes into the chassis rather than the solder joints.

  7. Step 07

    Charge cycle testing

Full charge and discharge cycle with current measurement to confirm proper charging rate, plus data and display testing on USB-C ports.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
DC jack on daughterboard (cable-connected) The simplest case — the small board is replaced as a unit. ₹900 – ₹1,600
DC jack soldered to motherboard Board-level desoldering and resoldering with pad repair. ₹1,400 – ₹2,400
USB-C port replacement 24-pin fine-pitch work under microscope with preheating. ₹2,200 – ₹3,800
Charging IC / circuit repair Where arcing has already damaged the charging circuit. ₹1,500 – ₹3,200
Replacement adapter (correct spec) Correct voltage, current and tip type for your model. ₹800 – ₹2,400
Charging diagnosis Full isolation test whether or not you proceed with the repair. Free

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

The moment your charger needs to be held at an angle, book the repair. That is the cheap stage.

Unplug by holding the connector, never by pulling the cable. Cable-pulling is the most common cause of socket damage.

Do not charge with the laptop on a bed or sofa where the cable gets bent hard against the socket.

Use the original charger or a correctly specified replacement. Badly fitting third-party plugs wear the socket rapidly.

If you see discolouration or smell burning around the socket, stop charging immediately and call us.

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”

Laptop Charging Port & DC Jack Repair — your questions answered

My laptop only charges at a certain angle. How urgent is it?
Reasonably urgent. Every intermittent connection under load produces small arcs that damage the pads and eventually the charging circuit. Fixed now it is around ₹900; fixed in six months it is often ₹3,000 or more.
Is a USB-C port repair possible, or does the whole board need replacing?
It is repairable. The connector is soldered to the main board and replacing it needs a microscope, a preheater and controlled hot air, but it is standard bench work for us. Board replacement for a failed USB-C port is almost never necessary.
How do I know it is the port and not the charger?
We test both with known-good parts, free of charge. It is worth doing, because replacing the wrong one is a complete waste of money and we see it often.
Will the repaired port be as strong as the original?
Where the design allows, we add mechanical reinforcement so cable stress is transferred into the chassis rather than into the solder joints — which usually makes it more robust than it was originally.
My charging port is fine but the laptop still will not charge. What now?
Then it is likely the charging IC, a blown input fuse or the battery. All three are diagnosable and all three are repairable at board level. The bench diagnosis will tell us which.
Can I keep using the laptop until the repair?
You can, but avoid moving it while charging and stop immediately if you notice heat, discolouration or a burning smell around the socket.
