MacBook Trackpad & Force Touch Repair
Force Touch not clicking, cursor jumping or unresponsive zones — starting with the swollen-battery cause that explains most MacBook trackpad faults.
If your MacBook trackpad has stopped clicking, there is a very high probability that the trackpad is fine and the battery underneath has swollen. Apple's Force Touch trackpad does not physically move much — it uses force sensors and a haptic engine to simulate a click — and it needs a small, precise amount of clearance beneath it. A slightly expanded battery cell removes that clearance and the click stops.
We check for this first on every MacBook trackpad job, because replacing a healthy trackpad is an expensive way to not fix the problem. It also matters for safety: a swollen battery is a fire risk and should be dealt with the same day, whatever the trackpad is doing.
The technical detail, if you want it
Force Touch trackpads work quite differently from conventional ones. Four force sensors measure how hard you press, and a haptic engine produces a vibration that your finger interprets as a click. There is no mechanical switch to wear out, which is why genuine trackpad hardware failure is comparatively rare on these machines.
When the trackpad genuinely does fail, the causes are usually a damaged flex cable, liquid corrosion on the connector or sensor traces, or a failed haptic engine. A damaged flex cable is often the cheapest of these and is worth ruling out before replacing the module.
Software causes are also common and cost nothing to fix. Corrupted trackpad preferences, a stuck SMC state, or gesture settings that have been changed all produce symptoms that look exactly like hardware failure. Resetting the SMC and removing the trackpad preference files resolves a meaningful proportion of cases, and we always do that before opening the machine.
On several models the trackpad is part of the top case assembly rather than a separate part, which changes the cost significantly. Where a standalone trackpad replacement is possible for your model, we do that instead — and we always tell you which applies before quoting.
How we carry out this repair
Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.
-
Step 01
Battery swelling check first
Bottom case removed and battery inspected for expansion, plus a flatness check on a level surface. This is the cause in the majority of MacBook click-failure cases.
-
Step 02
SMC reset and preference rebuild
SMC reset and trackpad preference files removed, since corrupted preferences produce symptoms indistinguishable from hardware failure. Free, and it resolves a real proportion of cases.
-
Step 03
Flex cable inspection
Trackpad flex cable and connector checked for damage, corrosion and seating. Often the cheapest hardware cause and worth ruling out before module replacement.
-
Step 04
Force sensor and haptic testing
Pressure sensitivity across all four sensors and haptic engine response tested individually to locate the actual failure point.
-
Step 05
Repair-level recommendation
Battery replacement, cable repair, standalone trackpad replacement or top-case assembly — we quote the cheapest option that genuinely resolves it and explain why.
-
Step 06
Calibration and gesture verification
Force Touch sensitivity calibrated and every gesture tested, along with palm rejection, before the machine is returned.
Options and prices
Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.
| Option | Price | Notes |

| SMC reset / preference rebuild Free when performed alongside another job. | Free – ₹600 | Free when performed alongside another job. |
| Trackpad flex cable replacement Where the cable rather than the module has failed. | ₹2,500 – ₹4,500 | Where the cable rather than the module has failed. |
| Swollen battery replacement Resolves click failure and removes the safety risk. | ₹4,500 – ₹12,500 | Resolves click failure and removes the safety risk. |
| Standalone trackpad replacement Where the model allows the trackpad to be replaced separately. | ₹4,500 – ₹9,500 | Where the model allows the trackpad to be replaced separately. |
| Top case assembly (trackpad integrated) Where the trackpad cannot be separated from the assembly. | ₹8,500 – ₹16,500 | Where the trackpad cannot be separated from the assembly. |

Advice from our bench
Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.
Place your MacBook on a flat table and press each corner. If it rocks, the battery has swollen and needs urgent attention.
Try an SMC reset before booking anything — it is free, takes a minute and fixes a surprising number of trackpad faults.
Never press hard on a trackpad that has stopped clicking. If a swollen cell is behind it, you are pressing directly on a damaged battery.
Keep the trackpad surface clean and dry. Moisture is a common cause of erratic cursor behaviour on MacBooks.
If you use an external mouse anyway, still get a swollen battery dealt with. It is a safety issue regardless of the trackpad.

Customers who had this repair
“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”
