Laptop Not Turning On — Dead Laptop Diagnosis & Repair

A laptop that shows no sign of life feels like the worst possible fault, and it is very often one of the cheapest. 'Completely dead' covers everything from a failed ₹600 adapter to a shorted power rail on the motherboard, and there is no way to know which without measuring. That is why the diagnosis is a flat ₹350 rather than a percentage of a guess — and why it comes straight off your bill when you go ahead, so finding out costs you nothing on a job you approve.

What we will not do is guess. A no-power fault has a defined sequence of causes, and each can be tested for in order: adapter output, DC jack continuity, input fuse, always-on rails, embedded controller, power-on signal, CPU core rails. Working through that list takes under an hour on the bench and tells us precisely where the sequence stops.

The technical detail, if you want it

It helps to know what 'turning on' actually involves. When you press the power button, the laptop does not simply connect the battery to everything. There is an ordered sequence: the input voltage is checked, a couple of always-on low-voltage rails come up to power the embedded controller, the controller sees the button press, it asserts a power-on signal, the main rails come up one at a time in a defined order, the clock generator starts, reset is released, and only then does the CPU begin executing code.

If any step in that chain fails, nothing happens — and because the failure is silent, every different cause looks identical from outside. Our approach is to power the board from a bench supply and watch the current draw. A dead short pulls large current at zero volts and points straight at a failed capacitor or MOSFET. Zero current usually means an open input — a blown fuse or a broken jack. A small, stable current that never progresses points at the embedded controller or the power-on signal chain.

From there it is measurement against the schematic, and the fix is usually one component. It is also worth saying that a meaningful proportion of 'dead' laptops we receive are not dead at all — a failed adapter, a completely flat battery that needs a forced reset, or a stuck power sequence that clears with a power drain. Those cost nothing to establish and we do not invent faults where none exist.

How we carry out this repair

    The free simple checks first

    Bench supply current signature

    The board is powered from a controlled supply and the current draw measured. Short, open or stalled — each has a distinct signature and it narrows the fault immediately.

    Input stage verification

    Input fuse, protection circuitry and the first-stage regulator checked in sequence against the schematic for your board revision.

  4. Step 04

    Always-on rail testing

    The low-voltage rails that power the embedded controller are verified, since the sequence cannot even start without them.

  5. Step 05

    Power-on signal chain

    Power button continuity, the controller's power-on assertion and the enable lines for each main rail are traced in order.

  6. Step 06

    Core rail and clock check

    CPU core rails, clock generator output and the reset line are measured to confirm where the sequence actually stops.

  7. Step 07

    Component-level repair

    The failed component is replaced under the microscope with the board preheated, and the full sequence retested from the beginning.

  8. Step 08

    Extended verification

    Repeated cold-start testing over 48 hours, because intermittent power faults commonly return only after the board has fully cooled.

Before assuming the worst, try a different known-good charger. A failed adapter is the most common cause of a completely dead laptop.

Try a forced power drain: disconnect the charger, remove the battery if removable, and hold the power button for thirty seconds.

Check that the wall socket and extension board actually work — it sounds obvious and it is occasionally the answer.

If you smell burning, do not keep trying to power it on. Each attempt can extend the damage.

Do not let anyone quote a motherboard replacement without showing you a measured fault. Ask what current the board draws.
