MacBooks handle liquid worse than most Windows laptops, and the reason is the design. The keyboard and speaker grilles sit directly above the logic board, so a spill on the keyboard runs straight down onto fine-pitch components rather than being caught by an intermediate layer. Combine that with densely packed boards and small component pitches, and corrosion does damage quickly.

Speed is everything. Power off immediately by holding the power button, do not plug in the charger, do not press the power button again to see if it works, turn it upside down like a tent, and call us. A MacBook that reaches us within hours has a good chance of full recovery. The same machine after a week and three restart attempts often does not.

The technical detail, if you want it

There is an additional consideration on modern MacBooks that does not apply to Windows laptops, and it needs saying plainly: on T2 and Apple Silicon machines the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted to the Secure Enclave. If the board is beyond recovery, the data on it is generally beyond recovery too. There is no removing the drive and reading it in another machine.

That changes the calculus after a spill. On an older Intel MacBook with a removable SSD, the data is almost always safe even if the board is not. On a current machine, board recovery and data recovery are the same problem. We explain exactly where your specific machine stands before you decide anything.

The repair process itself is thorough. Complete disassembly to the bare board, ultrasonic cleaning in a specialist solution that lifts residue from beneath the shields and components, chemical neutralising of corrosive residue, controlled drying, then a full microscope survey for lifted pads, corroded vias and severed traces. Component replacement and trace rebuilding follow, then conformal coating and an extended test cycle.

We are also honest about odds before taking your money. Sugary drinks and salt water are far more destructive than clean water, and a machine that was powered on after the spill is in a materially worse position. You get a realistic assessment from the microscope survey, not an optimistic one.

    The battery is disconnected first. As long as it is connected, residual voltage keeps driving corrosion through the liquid residue.

    Complete disassembly

    Stripped to the bare logic board with every shield and module removed, since residue trapped under a shield continues corroding invisibly.

  4. Step 04

    Ultrasonic cleaning

    Specialist solution and ultrasonic agitation lift residue from beneath fine-pitch components — the one place no brush reaches and where corrosion always begins.

  5. Step 05

    Neutralising and controlled drying

    Corrosive residue chemically neutralised so it cannot continue eating traces, then dried thoroughly under controlled conditions.

  6. Step 06

    Microscope survey with photographs

    Every affected area examined for lifted pads, corroded vias and severed traces, photographed and shared with you before any quote.

  7. Step 07

    Honest odds and data-risk briefing

    A realistic recovery probability, plus a clear explanation of the soldered-storage data position on T2 and Apple Silicon machines.

    Component repair, coating and 72-hour testing

Advice from our bench

Power off immediately by holding the power button for five seconds. Do not shut down normally — every second the board is live matters.

●

Never plug the charger back in "to see if it works". That is the single most damaging thing people do after a spill.

●

Do not use rice. It cannot draw moisture out from under components in a sealed chassis and it wastes the critical first hours.

Turn the MacBook upside down like a tent so liquid drains away from the logic board rather than pooling on it.

●

On T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks, back up continuously. Soldered storage means a dead board can mean lost data with no second chance.

How fast do I need to act after spilling liquid on a MacBook?
Within hours. MacBook designs channel liquid straight onto the logic board, and corrosion begins immediately. Recovery odds are very good in the first few hours and decline steadily after that.
Can my data be recovered if the board is dead?
On older Intel MacBooks with removable SSDs, almost always. On T2 and Apple Silicon machines the storage is soldered and encrypted to the board, so if the board cannot be recovered the data usually cannot either. We tell you exactly where your machine stands.
My MacBook worked fine after the spill. Do I still need it cleaned?
Yes, and this matters. Corrosion continues silently underneath the components. Machines that work for two or three weeks and then fail suddenly are extremely common after untreated spills. A preventive clean now costs a fraction of board recovery later.
Does AppleCare cover liquid damage?
Standard warranty does not. AppleCare+ covers accidental damage subject to a service fee. If you have AppleCare+ it is generally worth using it, and we will tell you so.
What are my realistic chances of recovery?
It depends on the liquid type, how quickly the machine reached us and whether anyone tried to power it on. We give you a specific probability after the microscope survey, with photographs, before you spend anything.
