Laptop Powers On But No Display — Black Screen Repair

Laptop powers on, fan spins, but the screen stays black. We separate panel, backlight, cable and graphics faults before quoting.

A laptop that powers on with a black screen is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed faults in this trade, and the misdiagnosis is expensive. It gets called a dead motherboard and quoted accordingly, when in reality there are five distinct possible causes and three of them are cheap.

The fastest test costs nothing and you can do it yourself. Shine a bright torch at the screen at an angle in a dark room. If you can faintly make out the Windows desktop or the manufacturer logo, the panel is working and only the backlight has failed — that is an inexpensive repair. If the screen is genuinely blank under the torch, connect an external monitor. If the external monitor shows a picture, the graphics chip is fine and the fault is in the panel, the cable or the backlight. If the external monitor is also blank, the fault is on the board.

The technical detail, if you want it

Working through the possibilities in order of cost is the whole point.

Backlight failure is the cheapest. The panel is displaying correctly but the LEDs illuminating it are not lit, either because the LED strip has failed or because the backlight driver circuit on the board has. Under a torch you can see the image faintly, which makes it easy to identify.

A failed display cable is next. Signals get through intermittently or not at all, and the classic sign is a picture that changes or appears when you flex the lid. Cables chafe where they bend at the hinge, particularly on machines that have had a hinge problem.

A failed panel itself is third — the panel is dead and shows nothing even with a known-good cable, but an external monitor works perfectly.

Fourth is RAM. A laptop with a failed or badly seated memory module often powers on and shows nothing at all, sometimes with a beep pattern. Reseating or replacing the RAM fixes it and costs very little, and it is worth ruling out early because it is so cheap.

Fifth, and only after eliminating the others, is a graphics or board fault — a failed discrete GPU, cracked solder joints under the graphics package, or a failure in the video output stage. That is real board-level work, and it is where honest diagnosis matters most, because it is also the fault that gets blamed for the other four.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Torch test and external monitor

The two fastest tests, done first and free. Together they separate backlight, panel, cable and board-level causes within minutes.

  2. Step 02

    RAM reseat and swap test

Memory removed, contacts cleaned and reseated, then tested with known-good modules. It is cheap to rule out and it is the answer more often than people expect.

  3. Step 03

    Known-good panel and cable test

Your machine is tested with a bench panel and cable, which conclusively separates a panel fault from a cable fault from a board fault.

  4. Step 04

    Backlight circuit measurement

Backlight enable signal and LED drive voltage measured at the connector to confirm whether the fault is the panel's LEDs or the driver on the board.

  5. Step 05

    GPU thermal and load testing

Where the fault points at graphics, the GPU is tested under load with thermal imaging to identify cracked joints or a failed package.

  6. Step 06

    Written quote by cause

You get the identified cause, the cost, and — where a GPU reball is involved — an honest assessment of how long that repair is likely to last.

  7. Step 07

    Repair and verification

Repair carried out, then extended testing across cold and warm starts because display faults are frequently temperature-dependent.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
RAM reseat or replacement Free if reseating alone resolves it. ₹0 – ₹2,200
Display cable replacement Common where the picture changes with lid movement. ₹700 – ₹1,600
Backlight LED / driver repair Where the image is visible under a torch. ₹900 – ₹2,400
Panel replacement Matched specification. See our screen replacement service. ₹2,200 – ₹6,500
GPU reball For cracked solder joints under the graphics package. ₹4,500 – ₹8,500
Video output stage repair Board-level repair of the display output circuitry. ₹2,500 – ₹6,000

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

Do the torch test yourself before calling anyone. If you can see a faint image, it is a backlight fault and should not be quoted as a motherboard.

Try an external monitor. If it works, your graphics chip is healthy and the fault is in the display assembly.

Reseating the RAM is free and fixes this fault more often than most people would believe.

If artefacts or coloured blocks appeared before the black screen, that points to the GPU and is worth mentioning when you call.

Never accept a motherboard replacement quote for a black screen without seeing the external monitor test performed.

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”

Laptop No Display / Black Screen Repair — your questions answered

My laptop turns on but the screen is black. Is the motherboard dead?
Usually not. There are five common causes and three of them are inexpensive — backlight, display cable, panel, RAM, and only then graphics or board. The torch test and an external monitor separate these in under five minutes, free.
What does the torch test tell me?
If you can faintly see the desktop when shining a torch at the screen, the panel is displaying correctly and only the backlight has failed. That is one of the cheapest display repairs there is.
An external monitor works but the laptop screen does not. What does that mean?
Your graphics chip and motherboard video output are healthy. The fault is in the panel, the display cable or the backlight — all considerably cheaper than board-level work.
Can a laptop black screen be caused by RAM?
Yes, and it is more common than people expect. A failed or poorly seated memory module often produces a completely blank screen. We reseat and swap-test the RAM early because it costs almost nothing to rule out.
How long does a GPU reball last?
It varies honestly — anywhere from months to years depending on the underlying cause and how well the cooling is maintained afterwards. We give you a realistic assessment for your specific machine before you commit, rather than promising a permanent fix.
Is the diagnosis free for a black screen?
Yes, including collection and return if you choose not to proceed.
