Liquid Spill on Laptop
Spilled water, coffee, or tea on your laptop? Turn it off immediately. Do not try to turn it back on. Every second counts to prevent permanent motherboard corrosion.
What to do right now:
- Disconnect Power: Unplug the charger immediately.
- Force Shutdown: Hold the power button down for 10 seconds until the screen goes completely black. Do not shut down through the Windows menu—it takes too long.
- Unplug Everything: Remove USB drives, mice, and any external cables.
- Invert the Laptop: Flip it upside down in an inverted 'V' (tent shape) on a towel so the liquid drains away from the motherboard.
What NOT to do:
- ❌ Do not put it in rice. Rice does not absorb moisture from inside a closed laptop chassis, and rice dust will clog your fans and ruin your keyboard.
- ❌ Do not use a hair dryer. Heat will melt your keyboard keys and blow the liquid deeper into the motherboard circuits.
- ❌ Do not try to turn it on to "see if it works". This is what actually kills the laptop. Water plus electricity equals a short circuit.
How we fix it
If you bring it to our Virar workshop immediately, we will completely disassemble the laptop, disconnect the battery, and place the motherboard in an ultrasonic cleaner with 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove all liquid and mineral deposits before corrosion sets in. This has a very high success rate if done quickly.
