Laptop Keyboard Replacement & Key Repair

Dead keys, sticky keys, repeating characters or a keyboard damaged by a spill — repaired or replaced with the correct layout and backlight type.

Keyboards fail in this region far more often than the national average, and the reason is environmental. Humidity works into the membrane layers and corrodes the printed contacts, monsoon moisture accelerates it, and coastal salt air near Arnala, Rajodi, Bhuigaon and Pachubandar makes it worse still. Add the ordinary causes — spills, worn key mechanisms, crumbs — and keyboard work makes up a steady share of everything on our bench.

The important question is whether you need a repair or a replacement, and it is genuinely worth asking. A single key that has lost its scissor clip needs a ₹150 part, not a ₹2,500 keyboard. A key that types intermittently because of debris under the cap needs cleaning. But a membrane with corroded traces cannot be repaired reliably, and anyone who tells you otherwise is going to leave you with a keyboard that fails again in three months.

The technical detail, if you want it

A laptop keyboard is three layers plus the caps. On top are the keycaps, held on by a plastic scissor or butterfly mechanism. Under those is a rubber dome that provides the tactile feel and pushes down on the layer below. At the bottom is a printed membrane — two flexible sheets with conductive traces and a spacer between them; pressing a key bridges the two sheets at that point and registers the keystroke.

Each layer fails differently. A broken scissor clip means the key wobbles, sits at an angle or pops off — replaceable individually and very cheap. A worn rubber dome means the key needs a hard press to register — sometimes fixable, often a sign the whole keyboard is worn. A corroded or scratched membrane trace means the key is intermittent or dead, and that is not repairable; the keyboard is replaced.

One more failure mode is worth knowing about: a key that repeats endlessly or types by itself. That is usually a shorted membrane trace, and it is what happens after a liquid spill has dried. It is also a symptom that will get worse, so it is not worth living with.

We also match the layout and backlight type when replacing. A backlit keyboard fitted to a machine with a non-backlit one will physically fit but never light, and vice versa. It sounds obvious; it is a mistake we see regularly on machines that have been to other repairers.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Key-by-key mapping test

We run a diagnostic that logs every key press so we can identify precisely which keys are dead, intermittent or repeating — rather than relying on what you noticed.

  2. Step 02

    Ribbon and connector check

A fully dead keyboard is often a dislodged or damaged ribbon cable rather than the keyboard itself. That is a very cheap fix and we always check it first.

  3. Step 03

    Repair-versus-replace assessment

Broken scissor clips, dislodged keycaps and debris are repaired individually. Corroded or scratched membrane traces mean replacement, and we show you the evidence.

  4. Step 04

    Correct part matching

Layout, backlight type, connector pin count and frame style matched to your exact model — a backlit keyboard on a non-backlit machine will fit but never light.

  5. Step 05

    Fitting

On most laptops the keyboard is accessed from the top or through the bottom panel. On unibody designs it is riveted into the top case and we explain that cost difference before quoting.

  6. Step 06

    Full test before handover

Every key tested individually, function keys and shortcuts verified, backlight levels checked, and the trackpad retested since it shares the same cable route.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
Single keycap / scissor clip repair Where only one or two keys have lost their mechanism. ₹150 – ₹400
Keyboard deep clean (sticky keys) Keycaps removed, mechanisms ultrasonically cleaned. ₹500 – ₹900
Standard keyboard replacement Most HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus models. Usually same day. ₹900 – ₹2,200
Backlit keyboard replacement Backlight type matched to your original. ₹1,800 – ₹3,200
Unibody / top-case integrated keyboard Keyboard riveted into the top case; palm rest replaced as one unit. ₹2,800 – ₹4,500
Ribbon cable replacement only Where the keyboard is fine but the cable is damaged. ₹400 – ₹800

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

After any spill, power off immediately and turn the laptop upside down like a tent. Do not switch it on to check — that is what turns a cleanable spill into a dead board.

In coastal and creek-side areas, keep the laptop in a closed bag with silica packs overnight. It measurably reduces membrane corrosion.

A key that has started repeating will get worse. It is a shorted trace and it does not recover on its own.

An external USB keyboard is a perfectly good temporary measure while you decide, and costs a few hundred rupees.

If only the backlight has failed, the keys usually still work — that is a lower-priority repair and we will tell you so.

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”

Laptop Keyboard Replacement — your questions answered

Can you replace just one key instead of the whole keyboard?
If the problem is a broken keycap or scissor clip, yes — that is a ₹150 to ₹400 job. If the membrane trace underneath is corroded or scratched, the keyboard has to be replaced; a repaired membrane fails again quickly.
My keyboard stopped working after a spill. Is it always replacement?
Not always. If the liquid was clean water and the machine reached us quickly, ultrasonic cleaning sometimes saves it. Sugary drinks and salt water are far more destructive and usually mean replacement.
How long does keyboard replacement take?
Same day for stocked models — typically forty-five minutes on the bench. Unibody designs where the keyboard is riveted into the top case take longer and we tell you the timeline before quoting.
Will the new keyboard have the same backlight?
Yes. We match layout and backlight type to your original. A backlit keyboard fitted to a non-backlit machine will physically fit but never illuminate, and we will not do that.
Some keys type the wrong characters. Is that hardware?
Sometimes it is a language or layout setting rather than a fault, and that costs nothing to correct. We check the software side first before recommending any hardware work.
Is the trackpad affected by keyboard replacement?
It shares the same cable route on many models, so we always retest the trackpad after fitting. If it was working before, it works after.
