MacBook displays are more expensive to replace than any Windows laptop panel, which makes correct diagnosis unusually valuable here. On a MacBook, several different faults produce a broken-looking screen and they range in cost from a few thousand rupees to a substantial fraction of the machine's value. Getting the diagnosis right is the difference.
The most important one to recognise is flexgate. On 2016–2019 MacBook Pro models, the display flex cable is routed over the hinge and wears through with repeated opening. It starts as uneven backlighting along the bottom edge — often described as a stage-light or curtain effect — and progresses to the backlight failing entirely at wider lid angles. Apple's own repair path is a whole display assembly. The cable itself can be repaired for a fraction of that, and on a machine that is otherwise healthy it is by far the better answer.
The technical detail, if you want it
A MacBook display assembly is a bonded unit: the Retina panel, the backlight, the flex cables, the camera, the antennas and the aluminium lid are laminated together. That is why Apple replaces the whole assembly — it is the only path they support.
At component level there is more scope. If the glass and panel are intact and the fault is the flex cable, the cable is replaced. If the backlight has failed but the panel is fine, the backlight circuit on the logic board or the LED strip is the target. If a single panel within an intact assembly has failed, panel-only replacement is possible on several models with careful de-bonding — it requires heat, patience and the right tooling, but it costs considerably less than a full assembly.
We also see a specific and expensive mistake: backlight faults on MacBooks are frequently caused by a blown backlight fuse or a failed backlight driver on the logic board rather than by the display at all. Replacing a display assembly on a machine whose actual fault is a ₹1,500 board-level repair is a costly error, and it happens. We measure the backlight enable signal and drive voltage at the connector before recommending anything.

Advice from our bench

If you see uneven light along the bottom of the screen, get it looked at immediately. Flexgate is far cheaper to fix before the cable severs completely.
Avoid opening the lid past about 90 degrees on an affected 2016–2019 MacBook Pro until it is repaired — wider angles accelerate the cable wear.
Never clean a MacBook screen with alcohol or household cleaner. It degrades the anti-reflective coating and causes staingate.
Close the lid on nothing. A single earphone or cable is enough to crack a Retina panel.
Ask whether a cheaper repair level exists before agreeing to a full display assembly. Very often it does.
