Laptop Trackpad & Touchpad Repair

Trackpad not clicking, cursor jumping or gestures not working — including the swollen-battery cause most repairers miss.

Trackpad faults are frequently misdiagnosed because the most common physical cause is not the trackpad at all. If your trackpad has stopped clicking properly — it feels stiff, or only clicks at one corner, or does not click at all — the first thing to check is whether the battery underneath has swollen. On most modern laptops the battery sits directly beneath the trackpad, and even slight cell expansion pushes up against it and removes the clearance it needs to move.

That matters for two reasons. Replacing a perfectly good trackpad will not fix it, and a swollen battery is a genuine fire risk that needs attention urgently. We check for it first on every trackpad job, and it turns out to be the answer surprisingly often.

The technical detail, if you want it

Beyond the battery, trackpad faults fall into a few categories.

Software and driver issues account for a large share and cost nothing to fix. A driver update gone wrong, gesture settings changed, or the trackpad disabled by a function key — we always check these before opening anything, and a meaningful number of 'broken trackpad' calls end there.

Cable and connector problems come next. The trackpad connects to the board by a ribbon cable, and on many models that cable routes near the keyboard. A previous repair that did not seat it properly, or a cable damaged during keyboard replacement, produces intermittent or complete failure. Reseating is often all that is needed.

Moisture is a common cause in this region. Humidity and small spills get under the trackpad and corrode the contacts, producing erratic cursor movement, phantom clicks and unresponsive zones. Cleaning sometimes recovers it; corrosion on the flex traces does not.

And finally, genuine hardware failure of the trackpad module — the sensor board or the microswitch beneath it. On some models the trackpad is a separate replaceable part; on others it is integrated into the palm rest and the whole top case has to be replaced, which is a significant cost difference we always explain before quoting.

How we carry out this repair

Every stage is documented and you see photographs of the actual fault before you approve any work.

  1. Step 01

    Function key and settings check

We confirm the trackpad has not simply been disabled and that gesture settings are correct. This is free and it resolves a real proportion of cases.

  2. Step 02

    Driver reinstall and test

Clean driver removal and reinstall from the manufacturer package, since a corrupted driver produces symptoms identical to hardware failure.

  3. Step 03

    Battery swelling inspection

The bottom panel comes off and the battery is checked for expansion — the leading physical cause of click failure and a safety issue in its own right.

  4. Step 04

    Cable and connector reseating

Ribbon cable inspected for damage, contacts cleaned and the connector reseated properly. Often the entire fix.

  5. Step 05

    Corrosion cleaning

Where moisture has reached the contacts, the flex and pads are cleaned and inspected under magnification for trace damage.

  6. Step 06

    Module replacement if needed

Where the trackpad module itself has failed, it is replaced — or, on integrated designs, we explain the top-case replacement cost before you commit.

  7. Step 07

    Calibration and gesture testing

Sensitivity calibrated, palm rejection verified, and every gesture tested individually before handover.

Options and prices

Where more than one approach solves your fault, we quote all of them and explain the trade-off. The cheapest option that genuinely works is always on the list.

Option Price
Settings / driver fix Free when done alongside another job. Free – ₹400
Cable reseat and contact clean Common fix for intermittent or dead trackpads. ₹600 – ₹1,000
Swollen battery replacement Resolves click failure and removes the safety risk. ₹1,800 – ₹5,500
Trackpad module replacement Where the trackpad is a separate replaceable part. ₹1,200 – ₹2,600
Integrated top-case replacement Where the trackpad is bonded into the palm rest. ₹2,400 – ₹3,200
Trackpad diagnosis Including battery inspection, whether or not you proceed. Free

Prices are indicative ranges. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after the ₹350 bench diagnosis, and it does not change afterwards.

Advice from our bench

Some of this reduces the amount of work we get. We would still rather you knew it.

If the trackpad has stopped clicking, check whether the laptop still sits flat on a table. If it rocks, the battery has swollen and needs urgent attention.

Try the function key that toggles the trackpad — usually F5 to F9 with the Fn key. It costs nothing to rule out.

Erratic cursor movement is often moisture on the surface or the contacts. Wipe the surface dry and see whether it settles.

An external mouse is a perfectly good stopgap while you decide, and it also confirms the fault is the trackpad rather than Windows.

Do not press hard on a trackpad that has stopped clicking. If a swollen battery is behind it, you are pressing on a damaged cell.

“My Omen was shutting down mid-game and two shops told me the graphics card had failed. These guys measured the temperatures first, showed me the graph, and it turned out the heatsink was completely blocked. Full clean and repaste, temperatures dropped by around 20 degrees, and it has been stable for four months. They saved me from buying a card I did not need.”

“The service centre quoted me ₹16,500 for a new motherboard. I brought that quote here and they opened it under a microscope, photographed the burnt component and repaired it for ₹2,800. They also showed me why my charger was causing it. Three months on, no problems at all.”

“Our parish office computer stopped working and we were told to buy a new one. They came out, found it was the power supply, replaced it for a small amount and also set up backups for our records which nobody had ever done. Very patient in explaining everything. We now have them on a yearly arrangement.”

Laptop Trackpad & Touchpad Repair — your questions answered

My trackpad has stopped clicking. What causes that?
On modern laptops the most common physical cause is a swollen battery underneath pushing up and removing the clearance the trackpad needs to move. It is also a fire risk, so it should be checked urgently rather than living with the click problem.
The cursor jumps around by itself. Is the trackpad broken?
Often it is moisture, either on the surface or corroding the contacts underneath, and cleaning resolves it. Sometimes it is a driver issue. Genuine sensor failure is the least common of the three, and we test in that order.
Can the trackpad be replaced on its own?
On many laptops yes, as a separate module. On some designs it is bonded into the palm rest and the whole top case has to be replaced, which costs more. We identify which applies to your model before quoting.
Gestures stopped working but the cursor moves. Why?
That is almost always a driver or settings problem rather than hardware. A clean driver reinstall usually restores full gesture support, and it is free when done alongside another job.
Is it worth repairing if I always use a mouse?
If the cause is a swollen battery, yes — absolutely, for safety reasons regardless of whether you use the trackpad. If it is a failed module and you never use it, we will tell you honestly that you can leave it.
How long does the repair take?
Same day for cable, cleaning and driver work. One to two working days where a module or battery has to be ordered.
