Spilled Water on Your Laptop? The First Ten Minutes Decide Everything
What to do, what never to do, and why the rice trick is actively harmful. A practical emergency guide from a bench that handles these every week.

Liquid on a laptop is the one fault where what you do in the first ten minutes matters more than anything a repair workshop does afterwards. A machine that reaches a proper bench within a few hours, never having been switched back on, has a very good chance of full recovery. The same machine after a week in a bag of rice and three attempts to restart it frequently does not.
Do this immediately
- Hold the power button for five seconds. Do not shut down through the menu — that takes thirty seconds you do not have. You want the power off now.
- Unplug the charger. Any voltage on the board drives corrosion and burns components through the liquid bridge.
- Remove the battery if it is removable. On modern laptops it is usually internal, in which case skip this and move faster on the next steps.
- Turn the laptop upside down like a tent, open, on a towel. This lets liquid drain away from the board rather than pooling on it.
- Call a repair workshop. Say it is a liquid spill — it should jump the queue everywhere that knows what it is doing.
Never do this
Do not switch it on to check whether it still works. This is the most common and most damaging mistake. Liquid bridges circuits that were never meant to connect. With power applied, current flows through those bridges and burns out components — often the charging IC or a power rail MOSFET. A spill that was entirely cleanable becomes a board repair, in seconds.
Do not put it in rice. Rice cannot draw moisture out from underneath components inside a sealed chassis. It also introduces starch dust into the vents, and — most importantly — it wastes the hours that actually matter. The rice trick persists because people who tried it and whose laptop survived credit the rice. What actually saved those machines was that they were switched off promptly.
Do not use a hairdryer. Heat can damage components and it pushes moisture further into places it has not yet reached.
Do not shake it vigorously. That spreads liquid to areas that were dry.
Why "it seems fine" is not fine
This is the part people find hardest to accept. A laptop that gets a spill, dries out and works normally for two or three weeks and then suddenly dies is one of the most common patterns we see. The reason is that the damage is happening in two stages.
The first stage is electrical and immediate — current flowing through the liquid bridge, if the machine was powered. The second is electrochemical and slow. Water carrying dissolved minerals, sugar or salt acts as an electrolyte, and wherever there is residual voltage it drives corrosion of the copper traces and solder joints. That process continues for days and weeks after the visible moisture has evaporated, quietly eating through a trace until it fails.
So a machine that survived a spill still needs cleaning. Ultrasonic cleaning removes the residue from beneath components where no cloth or brush can reach, and neutralising treatment stops the electrochemical process. A preventive clean costs a fraction of the board repair it avoids.
Not all liquids are equal
- Clean water is the best case. Minimal residue, and if the machine was powered off promptly, recovery odds are high.
- Tea and coffee leave sugars and acids that keep attracting moisture and continue corroding long after drying. Considerably worse than water.
- Juice and soft drinks are worse still — high sugar content plus acidity, and the residue is sticky and conductive.
- Salt or sea water is the most destructive. It stays conductive as it dries and drives corrosion aggressively. In coastal areas like Arnala, Rajodi, Bhuigaon and Pachubandar this is treated as a genuine emergency even when the machine still switches on.
MacBooks are a special case
Apple's designs channel liquid from the keyboard and speaker grilles directly onto the logic board, with no intermediate layer to catch it. That makes MacBooks less forgiving of spills than most Windows laptops.
There is a second issue on newer models. On T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted to the Secure Enclave. If the board cannot be recovered, the data on it generally cannot be either — there is no removing the drive and reading it elsewhere. If you own one of these machines, a working backup is not optional.
What happens on a proper bench
Complete disassembly to the bare board. Ultrasonic cleaning in a specialist solution that lifts residue from beneath fine-pitch components. Chemical neutralising so corrosion cannot continue. Controlled drying. A full microscope survey for lifted pads, corroded vias and severed traces, with photographs. Component replacement and trace rebuilding where needed. Conformal coating on the cleaned areas. Then a minimum seventy-two-hour test cycle, because liquid-damage faults frequently only appear after sustained running.
Anyone who "dries it out and tests it" has not done a liquid damage repair. They have delayed it.
